SEND Teaching Assistant

  • Contract: Term Time only (195 days)

We are seeking to appoint a passionate, motivated and dedicated SEND Teaching Assistant to work in partnership with teaching and other SEND Team staff. You will support the learning, engagement and progress of SEND pupils in a range of contexts. SEND Teaching Assistants: 
  • Work with class teachers to ensure SEND pupils engage in learning and make good progress;
  • Promote pupils’ independent learning skills, self-esteem and social inclusion; 
  • Give support to pupils through structured interventions so they can access the curriculum, take part in learning and experience a sense of achievement;
  • Act as a Key Worker for a number of SEND pupils, maintaining regular contact with parents / carers;
  • Work closely with Faculty Leaders to ensure teaching staff have the skills, knowledge, training and resources to differentiate appropriately to meet the needs of SEND pupils within their subjects;
  • Be linked to and support a faculty with SEND intervention and teaching strategies, developing expertise in a specific subject area;
  • Develop expertise in two specific aspects of SEND.
The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic and engaging Teaching Assistant who is:
  • Passionate about supporting young people to achieve their full potential, with an understanding of the barriers some students face in education.
  • A positive team player who can build strong relationships with students, staff and families, while working collaboratively within a classroom environment.
  • Confident in delivering targeted support and interventions for students at risk of underachieving, using effective learning strategies and ICT skills.
  • Calm, proactive and adaptable, with the ability to work effectively under pressure and respond positively to challenges.
  • Committed to safeguarding, inclusion and maintaining high standards to improve outcomes and life chances for all students.
  • Qualified to Level 3 or above, with the aptitude to work with young people and a willingness to continue learning and developing professionally.

We are looking to appoint a passionate, motivated and committed Progress Hub Leader to lead on our achievement provision. Our progress hub is separate to our behaviour support unit and works with pupils who are temporarily unable to attend normal lessons (e.g. due to SEND needs, or on a temporary basis due to injury).   At Whickham, inclusion and achievement are not just buzzwords – they are at the heart of everything we do. We set high expectations for all pupils, including those who are disadvantaged, have SEND, or may face other barriers to learning or wellbeing. Our students do not just achieve; they succeed and go on to thrive, gaining outcomes that prepare them for the next stage of their lives.   The core purpose of this role is to:
  • To support vulnerable pupils in achieving the best possible outcomes by leading and managing our Progress Hub, working closely with pupils, parents/carers and the wider staff team.
  • To support the wider achievement team in leading homework clubs, morning and after school tuition programmes and with external and mock examinations.

The Senior Administrative Assistant plays a key role in the effective running of the school office and school MIS (management information system), with specific responsibility on one day each week for arranging staff cover for lessons and duties. The post holder will also support Sixth Form administration and be involved in the transition process for new students. This role requires excellent organisational skills, discretion, and the ability to work calmly under pressure in a busy school environment.  You will provide administrative support in the main office and cover during the school holiday periods. We are seeking to appoint invigilators to carry out effective supervision of pupils to ensure exam protocols are followed.  Supervising pupils during the eam process, ensuring their health, welfare and security during that time.  An ideal candidate will:
  • be reliable, flexible and readily available during main exam periods
  • have effective communication skills and good interpersonal skills
  • work well as part of a team
  • be confident and a reassuring presence to candidates in exam rooms
  • be able to give instructions and manage situations involving different groups of people
  • have basic IT skills (familiar with use of email, mobile phone messaging etc.)
