How the stars are born: star formation
Date: Wednesday 16th December, 2026
Time: 16:00 – 17:30
Location: Main Hall, Whickham School, NE16 5AR
Overview
We learn in school that stars are formed from the gravitational collapse of gas clouds. This lecture will take that simple sentence and expand it with a deep dive into the process of star formation, along the way explaining why stars have different brightnesses and colours and why we see many in beautiful clusters. Attendees will dive into stellar nurseries, watch stars being born, and learn how we worked it all out.
