A users guide to the galaxy: stars, galaxies and nebulae
Date: Wednesday 25th November, 2026
Time: 16:00 – 17:30
Location: Main Hall, Whickham School, NE16 5AR
Overview
What do we see when we look up at night? Clearly there is structure there – the shapes of the constellations plus the dusty band of the “milky way” visible in late summer and early autumn. But what are we really seeing – and how does it relate to the beauty and bright colours we see in telescope images?
In this first lecture we will explore the structure of our galaxy and the glittering stars, star clusters, and nebulae that lie within it. Through breathtaking imagery, data, and simulations, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of our galaxy and its stars and nebulae which will make the wonders of the cosmos even more beautiful and inspiring.
As the first of our collaboration between Whickham School and Grizedale Observatory, this lecture will be introduced by Gary Fildes, Executive Director & Founder of Grizedale & Grassholme Observatories.
