About Us

This is a good school with many outstanding features

It is a school where every individual is cared for

The curriculum is outstanding

Students' personal development and well-being are outstanding

[Ofsted 2007]

Whickham School educates over 1600 students and has the largest sixth form in Gateshead. We are particularly proud of the above comments from our latest Ofsted report and constantly strive to ensure that we maintain the high standards recognised by Ofsted. Where students are cared for and provided with an excellent curriculum, they are much more likely to succeed. We want all of our students to learn in a happy and caring environment so that they are able to develop all their talents to the full. Whilst there is a strong emphasis on academic achievement, all students are encouraged to take part in a very wide range of extra curricular activities. Our Sportsmark and Artsmark Gold awards reflect the school’s commitment to educating the whole child.

We work hard to maintain excellent links with the community and are constantly looking for ways of enhancing this relationship. We have very strong links with our partner primary schools in curriculum and pastoral areas and in sport. These provide our students with the best possible start to their secondary school careers. Whickham School and Sports College is a happy community where students can learn and develop both academic and personal skills.

We look forward to welcoming you.

This Website

The Whickham School website was designed in collaboration with colleagues from the Gateshead City Learning Centre. Since our website went on-line in May 2007 we have had nearly 4.5 million hits, with almost 300,000 pages of information accessed from over 46,000 unique visits. It has greatly enhanced our communication with parents and our ability to keep the whole school community aware of a range of developments.

The website celebrates the achievements of Whickham students by highlighting student participation in a myriad of activities. As a Sports College, sporting success is regularly featured but we also highlight creative output at art exhibitions, music drama and dance performances and public speaking competitions. We also report on our many school residential trips, from New York to India.

The Whickham School website also provides important information on key dates or other pieces of important school news. We also host a range of school policies.

We hope you find the website a lively, engaging and useful source of information.

The school band makes a significant contribution to the cultural life of Whickham School. The band showcases musical talent from across the school and performs at a range of school events including Open Evening, Presentation Evening and the annual concert in March. The band also performs around the community at venues from primary schools to local churches. The attached podcast provides a brief flavour of the band’s work that we’re sure you’ll experience at first hand in the school and community.
