Girls' Rugby - Mayhem in the mud!

In their first season of contact rugby, the year 7 girls team set out for Durham on March 3 to compete in the regional final of the Emerging Schools' HSBC Rugby Festival knowing full well the rewards that victory would bring! They played three pool matches that were all fiercely contested.

Led ably by captain Megan Shaw, the girls won all three games that ensured qualification for the final against a strong and competitive St Johns School. This game was physical and closely fought. The deadlock was broken in the second half with a try from the Whickham captain. St Johns did not give up and came close to equalising on several occasions; however the result was sealed with a last ditch try from Whickham’s Ellie Gasgoine. To say that the team were ecstatic would be an understatement!

After much celebration, Whickham were presented with their trophy and the ultimate prize of representing the North East in the National Finals at Staines / Twickenham in May.

I know that the girls have done very well and are going to Twickenham after winning their rugby competition, but nothing about the boys winning their Gateshead Cup and Durham County Cup final after five hard games only conceding only 2 trys against them. Well done year 7 boys and Megan.
