Weaving the dream for Unit 15

All Year 12 BTEC ICT students have spent a day at Gateshead CLC learning the basics of Dreamweaver (an industry standard webdesign software package).

Part of their task for the Unit 15 (Organisational Systems Security) assessment puts them into the role of a junior technician within an small IT support company that provides software and hardware support to a number of small and medium sized businesses. The user support manager has asked them to prepare some web pages to go on the help section of the company website providing help and guidance on security issues.

Enter Peter Bolger and Chris Hewitson from Gateshead CLC....

Peter and Chris developed a day long course that encouraged the students to not only produce a simple website of their own but also to consider the wider issues of good and bad design, colour schemes, the use of images, layout and considering audience and purpose.

At the end of the day, the students were able to put their basic sites into their user areas back at school and start to add the content for their assessment.

Students were also given the opportunity to look at the CLC's websites and leave comments about the session. The first group were distracted by the CLCs cat 'Kenny' to the point that he suddenly had fifteen clones purring away. Good evidence for the 'defacement of a website' section of their task.

The second group were more selective with their posting but then spent a lot of their free time playing on CBBC games!

However, on their return to school, the general concensus was how good the day had been and although they had found using the software difficult' the majority had were successful in their outcome.

I look forward to seeing the finished results over the next few weeks as hand in date approaches!!
